These next few days will be very busy for those of us in the GSB and for our students, too. They are wrapping up their semester and getting ready for graduation. That is except for our first year MBAs. They are looking forward to their summer internships. Our students in the other programs: Master of Accountancy, Master of Arts in Economics, and Master of Information Systems are finishing projects, getting ready for finals, and definitely looking forward to graduation. Our MMBA (part-time MBA) students have class this Saturday and those in their second year actually don't graduate until after their last class in July. They will participate in Commmencement on May 8. The University of Arkansas only has one commencement ceremony each year.
Today is my daughter's birthday. Zoey is 13 years old. I can't believe it. For those of you living in academe right now, yes, I had her during finals week. I was doing my master's in counseling and my goal was to finish the semester before her arrival. It didn't work out that way and I had her on the day I was to take a final. Ironically enough, it was my "Family Counseling" final. I thought I should have been given an automatic pass considering what I was doing that day was very much related to "family." Today and tomorrow are busy for us at our house. Her party is tonight and then she actually talked her dad and me into letting her have a slumber party tomorrow night. I don't know what I was thinking. I haven't let her have one before so I guess I was feeling guilty. I made the Walmart trip last night and tried to stock up on everything 8 13-year old little girls will need. I'll be sure to post about how it went - if I survive.

You Won't Believe What I Did
So, I went to hook my camera up to my computer yesterday to download my pictures from the Governor's Cup and San Francisco. Well, that handy dandy little cable that connects my camera to my computer is still in the hotel room in San Francisco. Great, right? I have great photos of Alcatraz, the street cars, and the cute sea lions on Pier 39. One of these days I'll share them.
The semester is winding down. Finals are around the corner. Graduation is Saturday, May 8. On Friday, May 7 the Walton GSB will host a graduation party. Even though next weekend will be busy for us, and our students, I love seeing everyone so happy. It is a joyous time of celebration. Since I am involved in admissions, graduation is the final chapter and I like seeing how the story ends. Many students will bring their families to the graduation party and it's always fun to meet the parents/significant others, etc.
May 7 is also the day we requested decisions from our first round of offers for MBA and MMBA. I'll know more how the classes are looking then.
We will accept completed MMBA applications through July 31. Orientation is August 5-8.

Walton MBAs Cooked It Up In Rice
Okay, corny title but I couldn't resist. We had two teams compete in the Rice University small business plan competition last weekend. WE WON! For full details, visit http://www.alliance.rice.edu/alliance/RBPC.asp?SnID=333809435 and we were even featured in the NYTimes http://boss.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/20/rbpc2010/?src=busln. A second University of Arkansas team, InnerVision won the NASA Earth/Science Engineering Innovation Prize of $20,000, along with $1,500 for advancing to the semi-finals where they come in fourth. The full story can be found at http://newswire.uark.edu/article.aspx?id=13977.
On Monday we traveled to Little Rock to learn the results of the Donald W. Reynolds Governor's Cup - another small-business plan competition. Walton teams swept the graduate division winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Read the details at http://newswire.uark.edu/article.aspx?id=13978. The top two teams will now advance to Las Vegas for a tri-state competition.
I just tried to upload pictures of the winners and it didn't work. I'll try again later.
I am in San Francisco for a conference. The conference starts later today but I am going to try to get down to Fisherman's Wharf first. If I can get the pictures to upload later, I'll share what I've been up to. I arrived yesterday afternoon and ate dinner at John's Grill, made famous in the Maltese Falcon. It was really good. My time is limited so I need to get back out to see the sights. I have never been to San Fran before. More later.

MBA Admissions Update
The admissions committee met today and made decisions for the MMBA class to begin in the fall and the MBA class that will begin next January. Here are the summaries.
MBA - 52 files reviewed, admission offered to 27. Average GMAT = 661. All funding has been awarded. Official letters will be sent next week. Funding may become available for the next round of admissions as students decline our offer. At this time, there is no way of knowing how many of the 27 will accept. The goal for this class is 40 students.
MMBA - 24 students were admitted today and their average GMAT is 594. We will accept applications through July 31. Orientation is August 5-8 so all admissions must be finalized by this time.
I will be out of the office next week. On Monday, I am going to Little Rock for the awards banquet for the Governor's Cup. I am very excited to find out the results.
Tuesday through Saturday I will be in San Francisco at the NAGAP conference. I have not attended this event before and looking forward to learning new strategies and insights in graduate school admissions. I'll try to post from the west Coast.

Visiting UAPB Tomorrow & Admissions Update
I will be at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff tomorrow recruiting at their Career Fair. I am leaving this afternoon since it's a bit of a drive.
Next Tuesday, the 13th, I will be in Kansas City at an MBA America Tour Event. Visit www.mbaamericatour.com for details and to register.
It's been awhile since my last post. The GSB has been so incredibly busy. We just sent offer letters to our largest Master of Accountancy (MAcc) class yet. Over 100 applications were received and 60 students received offers. This program is 2 semesters and 30 hours. To learn more, visit http://gsb.uark.edu/macc.asp. We are no longer accepting applications for the MAcc.
April 1 was the deadline for our part-time MBA (MMBA) and the early decision deadline for our full-time MBA. So far, we have received a total of 110 MBA apps, compared to 157 last year total (through December and it's just now April). We do anticipate awarding all of our funding at this first admissions committee meeting.
MMBA applications will be accepted through the summer as space allows. Class size for this program is 60. You can email gsb@walton.uark.edu to get updates pertaining to space availability.
Final application deadline for the MBA is September 15. We have always accepted late applications for this program, typically through November. It is too soon to tell if we will have seats left after the September 15 deadline.
Keep in mind, that whereas applications are up this year, our funding opportunities are not. This is frustrating for you and us. For instance, in the MBA we still will have only 15 full GA's - tuition is waived and a stipend of $2500 each semester is provided. Our class size is currently mid-30's and we could conceivably be 40-45 next year. For the class that began in January of this year, we received a 62% increase in applications over the year before. The number of GA's we have stayed the same. So, we can increase our class size, we cannot increase the number of students who will receive funding.
I want to point out that a large percentage of students in the MBA do receive waived tuition. If we enroll 40 students next year and if 15 receive a full GA, that is nearly 38%. Not bad odds. If a student pays in-state tuition for the 3 semester program, tuition and fees are approximately $23,000. The Walton MBA is a wise investment with a competitive sticker price.
