Our small business plan team, Tears for Life, had a busy day yesterday. They left Fayetteville at 5:30 a.m. (yes, that is very early) and drove to Cincinnati, Ohio. They arrived and immediately competed in the 5 minute pitch/exhibit competition. Walton's team outperformed Brown, The Ohio State University, Oregon, and 14 others to win 2nd place! Cornell took 1st. Our team assures us that Cornell did a fantastic job.
This team competes again today at 10:00 (in just a few minutes). 5 of these 19 teams will advance to the finals.
One of our full-time MBA students, Scott Roper, recently had a success of his own. Scott will graduate in May and is currently a graduate assistant at Tyson's Consumer Insights Department. This area is responsible for marketing research. His supervisor asked him to design a logo for their department. Scott's logo was approved and adopted and it is now on all of Consumer Insights' reports and documents.
Since I am bragging about our MBA students, I should probably mention that the application deadline for both programs is April 1. For the full-time MBA, April 1 is the early application and the final deadline is September 15th. This program starts in January and is 16 months long. The part-time MBA (MMBA) deadline is April 1 but we will accept applications until all seats are filled. We would like to admit 60 students to this program and 40-42 to the full-time MBA.
Good luck Tears for Life. They will compete again in 30 minutes. I'll let you know how they did.

Huge Success at Tyson Yesterday
I visited Tyson's Corporate offices yesterday to present information about our two part-time programs: the Professional MIS and the Managerial MBA (MMBA). We had such a huge crowd that I ran out of brochures. That is always a good thing. If I run out of recruiting materials, that is a great trip.
On a side note, today is my baby boy's 5th birthday. We started the day off right with a trip to Rick's Bakery for donuts and a birthday cupcake. If you don't know about Rick's, it is AMAZING. I sent a visiting PhD student there a couple of weeks ago. She emailed later that it was the best. It is a Fayetteville institution. No visit to Fayetteville is complete without a trip to Rick's. My family loves it and we are regulars. Evidence is attached.
Next week I will be visiting ConAgra.
The Professional MIS application deadline is March 15 and the MMBA application deadline is April 1. Both programs will accept applications until all seats are filled. For MMBA, that would be about 60 students and for Professional MIS, it would be 15-20.

Master of Accountancy Application Deadline is Next Monday!
The application deadline for Master of Accountancy (MAcc) is next Monday, March 2. This program begins in August and students complete 30 hours in two semesters. Upon completion of the MAcc, students are eligible to sit for the CPA exam in Arkansas.
Last year's class consisted of 30 students. Their average GMAT score was 596. The GSB received 52 applications for this class. We have consistently seen an increase in applications this spring and we are not expecting MAcc to be any different. At present count, we have approximately 50. Since the deadline is not until next week, we are expecting to receive several more. We will accept applications through next week. The Accounting Department will pick up their folders the week of March 9.
Spring break at the University of Arkansas is March 16-20. Don't expect to receive an admissions decision for MAcc until the week of March 23.
Again, application deadline for the Master of Accountancy is next Monday, March 2. Turn your materials in immediately in order to be considered for financial assistance. The Department will accept late applications but their funding assistance will be gone. In order to be considered for financial assistance, your application must be received before the folders go to the admissions committee.

Professional MIS Mixer a Success
Last night we held our first annual Professional MIS Mixer. This event was for current, former, and prospective students for our Professional MIS program. This program begins in August and students take 6 hours each semester for 5 semesters by attending class one night each week. Application deadline is March 15. However, we will accept applications throughout the summer. The Professional MIS program is designed for full-time working professionals.
Tomorrow I will be visiting Tyson's Corporate offices to present information pertaining to both of Walton's part-time master's degree programs: the Professional MIS, mentioned above, and the Managerial MBA (MMBA). The MMBA also begins in August and takes 6 semesters to complete. Students take 6 hours each semester by attending class one Saturday each month. Application deadline is April 1. Applications will be accepted throughout the summer.
Now is a very good time to be thinking about graduate school. There is still time to complete the application process. Go to gsb.uark.edu to learn about our admissions requirements.

Walton Strikes Again!
Another Walton team represented us well this weekend. Tears for Life, a Walton team comprised of 3 MMBA students (Jared Greer, Chris Elizer, and Bessie Williams) and one honors undergraduate student (Jordan Greer - yes, he is Jared's little brother), won the Lightning Round at the University of Louisville small business plan competition yesterday. The pitch was written by all team members and then executed perfectly (I have been told) by Bessie Williams. The Lightning Round is an elevator pitch competition for teams that did not finish first in their track in the semi-finals. By all accounts, this team could have easily won the entire competition, and was a very good representative of the Walton College. They are heading to the University of Cincinnati on Thursday to compete again.
Only 12 of 36 applicants made it to the oral presentation round at Louisville. I’ll keep you apprised of the success of the Walton teams as the competitions unfold. We have five teams and so far, we are 8 for 8 in terms of being accepted to compete at national competitions, and are waiting on a couple more decisions. We are scheduled to compete at Carnegie-Mellon, University of Nebraska, University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati, Wake Forest, Tulane, University of San Francisco, and the Donald W. Reynolds Governor's Cup in Little Rock, AR. We are also submitting plans to compete at Boise State University, University of Oregon, Rice, Colorado State University, UC Berkley, and Montreal.
Keep in mind, these wins do not just give us bragging rights. There is prize money associated with these competitions. 1st place at the Governor's Cup gets $20,000, 2nd place is $10,000, and third place is $5,000. Each time a team competes and wins, it's pay day.

The week is winding down
It's Thursday, which means tomorrow is Friday. Woohoo. It has been a fairly busy week for Walton GSB recruiting. On Tuesday, we had a small information session in Rogers, AR. This event is primarily for those full-time working professionals who have a difficult time getting away to come to one of our Open Houses on campus. For those of you not familiar with Northwest Arkansas, Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville are the towns in this area. The GSB hosts an info session each semester in Rogers to discuss our part-time master's degree programs (MMBA and Professional MIS).
Yesterday, we had a photographer in Walker Hall. Each year we take a group shot of our graduating MBA and MMBA classes, as well as individual professional head shots. These head shots are available for our students to purchase. The group photo is hung on the 4th floor of Walker. We kept our photographer, Jim Bailey, very busy yesterday. If you have seen our new website and program brochures, then you are familiar with his work. He does all of our photography. While he was here yesterday, he took more photos for the web. Keep a watch on the new site, you'll see new pages added regularly.
Tonight is our spring Open House. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in a master's degree in business to come and see our fantastic facilities and technology. All master's degree program directors will also be present. They will meet with students to discuss their programs and to answer any questions. This event is always well attended. As you may realize, this is an excellent time to be looking at graduate school. This event is at 6:00 in Willard J. Walker Hall, 4th floor.
Tomorrow I am meeting with a couple of prospective students. One is coming in from Southern Methodist University. I always enjoy meeting with students who are interested in our programs. It gives them chance to check us out and it gives me the same opportunity. Later, when they apply, I have a little bit of insight. This can be helpful to the admissions committee.
I have also been able to speak to a few classes this week. It's important to get the word out about graduate school to our undergraduate students. They should not leave the Walton College without being aware of the programs we offer and the admissions requirements.
Next week is not as busy. I'll tell you about it tomorrow.

Fayetteville just named #6 by Forbes
Forbes magazine named Fayetteville, Arkansas it’s sixth-best on its top 10 list of “Top College Sports Towns” in its February edition. The criteria included what Forbes called “quality of life measures” such as housing costs versus median income, public school quality, crime and real estate numbers.
Here’s what Forbes magazine had to say about Fayetteville: “A medium-sized city of 75,000, Fayetteville has access to countless lakes and trails in the area around the Ozarks. The Razorbacks finished 24th in last year's Director's Cup, even though their legendary track team came up short in the NCAA Championships. Off the playing fields, Fayetteville four-bedroom homes run $252,950, which, for a median income earner of $38,983, isn't too bad. The town tied for 12th best in our quality of life rating that measured school performance and crime rates.”
We are in good company. The rest of the top list included:
1. Ann Arbor, Mich. (University of Michigan)
2. Palo Alto, Calif. (Stanford)
3. Madison, Wis. (University of Wisconsin)
4. State College, Pa. (Penn State)
5. Lexington, Ky. (University of Kentucky)
6. Fayetteville, Ark. (University of Arkansas)
7. Chapel Hill, N.C. (University of North Carolina)
8. Columbia, Mo. (University of Missouri)
9. Charlottesville, Va. (University of Virginia)
10.Bloomington, Ind. (University of Indiana)

MIS Applications
Our office is working on getting the MIS applications ready for departmental review. Last year the MIS application deadline was March 15. This year we moved it to February 1. Due to some confusion, we will accept applications through March 15. I do have to say, MIS has MANY very good applications. If you intend to apply to this program, the sooner you submit your application materials, the better.
This program does have limited funding. Graduate Assistantships (GA) are available that will waive tuition and provide a stipend of $2500 each semester. All admitted students are automatically considered for a GA. The MIS program is completed in one calendar year. Students begin in the fall and take 12 hours in fall and spring and then 6 hours over the summer for a total of 30 hours.
Applications for this program are up this year. The department will make their first round of admissions decisions very soon, within the next week. After March 15, they will make final decisions on any remaining applications.
If you intend to apply for our full-time MIS, APPLY ASAP. You can complete an online application at gsb.uark.edu.

February is a busy time for recruiting
In the world of recruiting, this is a busy time. Our PhD departments are making final admissions decisions. MIS and MAEcon will be making their decisions very soon. March 2 is the MAcc application deadline. Official letters will begin to go out any time now.
Today I am attending a Graduate School Fair here at the UofA. Tomorrow we will host an information session in Rogers at the Arkansas World Trade Center. On Thursday evening the GSB will host its spring Open House here in Walker Hall. I will be sure to take pictures so that I can share them with you.
Next Monday, we will host our first annual Professional MIS Mixer at the University House here on campus. This event will be for current, graduated, and prospective students for the Professional MIS program. If you are interested in attending this event, please RSVP to gsb@walton.uark.edu.
Pay close attention to application deadlines. They are approaching quickly

Week in review...
It is Friday and I am back in the office. It has been a very busy week for recruiting. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday were spent at career fairs getting the word out about graduate school to undergraduate students. On Wednesday, I met a prospective MMBA student and one of our MBA alumnus for lunch. Today, a visiting PhD student is on campus AND I am meeting a Professional MIS student for lunch. Boy, am I glad it's Friday. I have got to find time to get Valentine's for my kids.
I wanted to share more pictures from our Career Fair here at Walton College. We are the only College on campus with our own Career Development Center (CDC). The other Colleges (Architecture, Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Education, and Engineering) all share the University's Career Center. We are very fortunate to have an exceptional staff in our CDC. They work very diligently with our master's level students helping them to secure placement. A Career Fair is held once each semester. There are also smaller, more specific opportunities held throughout the year.
Next week I am sticking pretty close to the office. We have an information session in Rogers on Tuesday evening and then our GSB Open House is on Thursday. If you are near either location and would like to attend, please RSVP to gsb@walton.uark.edu.

Recent Career Fairs
I had so much to say today, I decided to write two posts. As those who know me will attest, I often have too much to say. This has been a busy week. Not only have we launched our new website, I have also attended two career fairs, one at OU and one here in the Walton College yesterday. Tomorrow I will go to Pittsburg, Kansas to their career fair.
Here are some pictures of the Walton College career fair that was held in the Willard J. Walker Hall yesterday.
This is the line of students waiting to get into the Career Fair. Walton College's Career Fairs are widely attended.
This is actually a picture of a student, Tom Spaniol, in our part-time MBA (MMBA). Tom is with Hershey and they were at the Career Fair looking for hot talent. In this picture, Tom is speaking with a new MBA student, Michael Novak. Great connections are being made.
I'll post more pictures next time. Tomorrow, I am off to Kansas.

5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 LAUNCH!!!!!!
Our new website was launched late yesterday afternoon. Please check it out and let me know what you think. The link is to the right (gsb.uark.edu). We do still have some corrections to make and we will be doing some minor tweaking as we get feedback.
This was a major undertaking and it couldn't have been done without our Assistant Dean, Marion Dunagan, our Walton College Web master, Leonard Ridley, and our MBA grad assistant, Dave Alderson. I have to say I probably did more harm than good. I gave Dave the words and then he made them look good. My attempts at web design failed miserably. Graphic artist, I am not. This has made me appreciate all of those great websites out there. I was calling this a redesign. I learned at a conference last year that we actually did a tear down and build back up. This was no small task. I never realized how many pages we really do have.
Anyway, everything is up to date and all pretty and shiny. I am very proud of this new site. I think it will be much more attractive to our shopping students.
Be sure to tell me what you think at gsb@walton.uark.edu.

Part-time/Professional MIS
On my last post, I reviewed our part-time MBA program. The Walton College has a second part-time option that is perfect for full-time working professionals. Our part-time MIS, also known as our Professional MIS is a 30 hour program. Students take 6 hours each semester but only meet in class one night each week for 5 semesters. The program begins in August and students finish in May, less than two years later. Students are able to do a concentration in either Enterprise Systems or Enterprise Resource Planning.
The Walton College is the only business school in the world to use the following mix of large-scale Enterprise Systems in class:
IBM zSeries Mainframe Server
NCR Teradata Database Server
SAP Enterprise Resource Planning
Microsoft SQL Server and Business Intelligence Studio
Large-scale, real-world data sets from Sam's Club, Tyson Foods, and Walmart
This application deadline is March 15. However, we will accept applications throughout the summer.

Part-time/Managerial MBA
Let's talk about what an amazing opportunity our part-time MBA is. We call this program our Managerial MBA (MMBA). This program starts each August and students take six hours a semester for six semesters by attending class in Fayetteville only one Saturday each month. This program was designed for full-time working professionals (i.e. very busy people). If you are a very busy person, this is the program for you.
Application deadline is April 1. However, we do accept application through the summer. To see the application criteria, go to gsb.uark.edu. We do end up enrolling about half of our applicants. This is a competitive and selective program. The admissions committee pays most attention to test score (GMAT is preferred but we will accept GRE) and work experience.
We are located in Northwest Arkansas - home of Walmart, Tyson Foods, Inc., and JB Hunt. Over 300 Fortune 500 companies are located in our backyard. Because of this unique situation, we have many highly qualified applicants. Current students are with Walmart, Tyson, JB Hunt, ConAgra, Dr. Pepper Snapple, Welch's, Leggett & Platt, P&G, Kraft, Cargill, Nestle, Hershey, and many, many more.
The Walton College GSB is fairly small compared to other schools of Business. Our total population is about 300. Over half of this number are MBA students - both part and full-time. Each August our new MMBA class enrolls approximately 60. These classes are held in the new state-of-the art Willard J. Walker Hall. Check it out by going to the link on the right. Each class is videorecorded for the convenience of our students. You can watch these lectures over and over, as many times as is needed.
Since class is only held once a month, many students do attend this program who are not from Northwest Arkansas. In between these monthly face-to-face meetings, you will be working online - turning in assignments, taking quizzes, participating in discussions. The Walton College uses Blackboard as our web-based classroom enhancer.
You would be fortunate to be in the next MMBA class to start in fall 2009. AND, you do still have time to apply. Contact gsb@walton.uark.edu with questions.

Upcoming Visits
I wanted to share my upcoming recruiting trips. Today I visited Walmart's Information Systems Division in Bentonville. When I visit corporate locations, I am providing information about our two part-time programs: the Managerial MBA (MMBA) and the Professional MIS. These programs are designed for full-time working professionals and are completed in two years (MMBA ) or less (21 months-Professional MIS).
Next week I will be going to Oklahoma University on Monday, February 9 to participate in their Martin Luther King, Jr. Fair. On Tuesday the 10th I will be here at the fabulous Walton College at our career fair. I will take pictures to post. Thursday, February the 12th, I will be going to Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.
If you are in Norman, OK or Pittsburg, KS, stop by and say HI.

Master of Accountancy Application Deadline Approaching
The next deadline that we will be dealing with here at the GSB is the March 1 application deadline for the Master of Accountancy.
The Walton College's Master of Accountancy (MAcc) is a two-semester, 30-hour program that begins in August. The admissions committee pays close attention to the GMAT score, GPA, Honors classes, extracurricular activities, and leadership roles. If an applicant scores 600+ on the GMAT and has a 3.2+ GPA, chances of admission are very good. Last year the department received approximately 60 applications and enrolled 30. If you complete the Walton College's MAcc, you are eligible to sit for the CPA exam in the state of Arkansas.
There are graduate assistantships (GA) available. Tuition is waived and a stipend of $2500 each semester is awarded in exchange for working 15 hours a week. All admitted students are automatically considered for a GA; no separate application is needed. The Accounting Department is also very fortunate to have several scholarship opportunities for the MAcc students. At the time a student receives their offer of admission, funding offers are included.
Be sure to submit all application materials by March 1 for full consideration for admission and funding.

Become Our Friend on Facebook
The Walton MBA has two facebook sites. Please visit and become a friend. These sites are managed by one of our MBA Ambassadors, Cameron Foster. This is a good place to get additional information and to talk to current students. The next deadline for MBA is April 1. This is the early decision deadline. Our next class does not begin until January 2010 but for those of you who are also considering other MBA programs that start in August, if you apply to the Walton MBA by April 1, you will have an admissions decision (along with funding offer) by May 1. This will allow you to be able to decide which program will be best for you. Be sure to keep an eye on the student blogs and email with questions - gsb@walton.uark.edu.

The University is Open for Business
The University of Arkansas is open and back in business today. There are still some parts of northwest Arkansas without power. My electricity came back on Saturday at noon. I was very glad. I have come to the realization (after 4 days without power) that I am just not a "roughing it" kind of girl. I am rather fond of hot showers and my hair dryer. My kids handled this experience much better than I did. They did not complain nearly as much as I did.
Applications are due for both the Master of Information Systems and the Master of Arts in Economics today. Since the University was closed four days last week, we will accept late applications.
The next application deadline is March 1 - Master of Accountancy.
